The BC Child and Youth Advocacy Coalition is a non-partisan, province-wide collaboration of over 95 provincial and regional organizations that mobilize British Columbians in support of strong public policies that will allocate resources to benefit and ensure all our children have access to programs on early childhood development, transition to successful adulthood, obtain economic equality and live in safe and caring communities. There are 8,000 youth in government care, 65% have been diagnosed with mental health issues, 55% are of Aboriginal heritage and 2/3 will reach age 19 without a high school diploma. Children transitioning out of foster care are over represented among BC’s homeless population.
Raise-a-reader programs throughout Canada marked International Literacy Day, an annual UNESCO event to raise awareness of a global shortfall. Literacy can empower communities towards economic growth, social development and environmental sustainability. An article in the online forum ‘World Pulse”, by GWI staff member Lorraine Mangwiro, highlights the plight of over 500 girls and women worldwide. CFUW participated at the UN round table on Preventing and Combating Labour Trafficking, exploitation in different fields such as; construction, agriculture, tourism and domestic work has great consequences for a society and exists very close to home.
