CFUW / FCFDU (historically known as Canadian Federation of University Women) is a national women’s group founded in 1919. It was formed in response to the founding of the International Federation of University Women (IFUW) now known as Graduate Women International (GWI). IFUW was founded by three women after the First World War, in the hope that a worldwide association of university women would help prevent another such man-made catastrophe. Since 1919, CFUW has worked to improve the status of women, to promote human rights, public education, social justice, and peace.
Today, CFUW is a voluntary, non-profit, non-denominational, self-funded, non-governmental organization with over 90 clubs and over 6600 members across Canada. CFUW/FCFDU members continue to work together to promote equal rights for women and girls in social, educational, economic, political, environmental and legal arenas, as well as promoting fellowship and lifelong learning for all women and girls.
